The introduction of the Stanier 5P5F 4-6-0 in August 1934 was the real answer to many of the Northern Division's needs, supplemented by a few Patriots and Jubilees on expresses, leaving only the heavy through expresses to England for the Pacifics. The Fairburn 2-6-4Ts were equally the solution to suburban passenger and some banking.
