6 Other Traffic

6A General Goods Traffic

In addition to the gas works coke traffic for export from Pomona Dock, coal and oil for bunkering together with general manufactured goods would traverse the dock branch. Various tank wagons, coal wagons and a variety of vans and opens (sheeted perhaps) would be required.

Inward traffic has been noted as Scandinavian pit props, Baltic timber, stone, gravel, china clay and small quantities of cotton bales. Guinness boats from Dublin used Pomona while there were regular sailings to both northern and southern Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Local coal merchants with an office in the coal yard would receive supplies for local delivery and an attempt is being made to identify suitable firms so that authentically signed offices can be installed.

It is envisaged that this traffic would be worked independently of the gas works coal traffic by a trip from Brindle Heath with, probably, an Agecroft engine. It would firstly shunt general traffic at the gas works, proceed to Pomona to shunt docks traffic, then shunt the local coal yard on its return to Brindle Heath, this sequence being necessitated by the lie of the various entry turnouts.

Other traffic that has been presumed to pass through Inkerman Street station would be the gas works coal trains between Brindle Heath and the Woodhead or Hope Valley routes, reversing at Brindle Heath to reappear on the Pomona branch; the Heaton Mersey and Hellifield goods; the Ancoats and Carlisle fitted goods and traffic for the main docks when access via New Barns junction would be more convenient than access via the CLC and Trafford Park. Western division trains would more likely use the connection off the Liverpool and Manchester between Weaste and Eccles so are unlikely to pass through Inkerman Street.

6B Passenger Traffic

The Victoria and London Road motor train has already been mentioned and it has been assumed that this route would not have been electrified with the MSJ&AR in 1931.

We have also assumed that the Colne/Euston through carriages and the Colne/Stockport connections to other Euston trains would pass, non-stop, through Inkerman Strret. We also envisage Stockport/Bolton trains to connect with the Victoria/Scotland services. There would also be local Wigan/Bolton/Stockport trains calling at Inkerman Street. Scope for much variety.
