ROAD MOTOR ENGINEER'S WORKSHOPS

The above shop which is a converted Locomotive Repair Shop was authorised by M.& E.E. Committee Minute No.425, 20.12.33. The premises were occupied in January, 1935, and have an area of 30,000 sq.ft., the cost of conversion, including provision of the whole of the equipment being £15,800 approximately.

The equipment and machinery consists of the following:-

INSPECTION PITS (8)

There are eight vehicle inspection pits, six of which are arranged together with a gallery pit in which benches are positioned.

The pits are faced with glazed brickwork and are provided with upward bulkhead lighting.

The exhaust fumes from the vehicles on the pits are carried outside the building by means of a duct.

HEATING AND VENTILATION

Separate low pressure heating boilers are provided for the workshop, offices and domestic purposes.

The heat in the main shops is by means of unit radiators fixed to the walls, each radiator being provided with a fan and directional louvres to dissipate heat to the precise position required.

Special ventilation is provided in the Paint Shop by means of two electric fans and exhaust ducts which are capable of providing 30 air changes per hour.

The shop is utilised for carrying out all the engine and chassis overhauls and certain of the major inspections of the motor vehicles in the immediate locality. The number of vehicles based on the Depot is 756 and 495 trailers, the district extending from Bristol to Nottingham and from Stafford to Northampton.
